In 1864 COAL was discovered at the Southwest corner of Coal City Road and Novy Road.. As a result of this important discovery, Braidwood was founded in 1865 and Incorporated as a City in 1873. It was the center of the coal mining industry, eventually having 40 mine locations. Our History Page will contain a map of these mine locations, as well as other data on their dates of operation and photographs of the mines, where available.
